Three police complaints have been filed against Assam BJP MLA Mayur Borgohain for allegedly threatening Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi with physical assault, officials said on Sunday.
The complaints were filed at Sivasagar Sadar police station by people associated with Gogoi and his party. The complainants alleged that Borgohain made "violent and provocative" remarks against Gogoi at a recent function in Sivasagar and threatened the Raijor Dal leader.
Police said they are conducting a preliminary investigation and will take appropriate action based on its findings. No immediate reaction was available from Borgohain.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) will convene its National Working Committee on August 24 to review the Union government's response to commitments made to protesting students and young citizens.
The party said it had called off its nationwide agitation on July 25 after the government assured it of action on FIRs against students and protesters, protection from punitive action against peaceful protesters and compensation for families of deceased NEET victims. It has now alleged that the government has failed to follow through on these commitments.
The CJP said all options remain open, including another peaceful nationwide agitation, if the commitments are not fulfilled. It has asked its students, supporters and volunteers across the country to remain prepared for its next course of action.

A mob protested when a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) team arrived with a bulldozer to demolish an allegedly illegally constructed political party office on Waqf land in Tollygunge on Sunday, officials said.
According to officials, the structure was reportedly a TMC party office and had been constructed on Waqf property. The civic team had arrived following a complaint seeking action against the construction.
A group of local women allegedly confronted the team and assaulted one person accompanying the officials, who was reportedly the complainant. The situation was later brought under control, while RAF personnel were deployed to maintain vigil, officials said.

Two men were arrested in Kasaragod, Kerala, for allegedly honey-trapping and extorting a 64-year-old businessman, police said on Sunday.
According to police, the businessman was invited to a woman's house on the pretext of returning money he had lent her. He was allegedly taken to a bedroom, where photographs and videos were recorded. The accused allegedly seized his phones, cash and ATM cards, obtained his PINs and withdrew Rs 7,200 from his account.
Police said one of the accused later allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh, threatening to circulate the photographs and videos on social media. A case has been registered against the two arrested men and the woman under relevant provisions of the BNS. Police are probing the woman's alleged role in the incident.

A 23-year-old Bangladesh national was arrested at Mirzapur railway station while travelling aboard a Delhi-bound express train without valid documents, officials said on Sunday.
The man, identified as Riyaz Ahmed, a resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh, was apprehended by Railway Protection Force personnel on Saturday night based on an alert. Preliminary inquiry indicated that he intended to travel to Kashmir and was travelling without a ticket in an AC coach of the Brahmaputra Mail.
Officials said Ahmed did not possess a valid passport, visa or other documents permitting entry into India. He was handed over to the Government Railway Police, which registered a case. The Anti-Terrorist Squad, Intelligence Bureau and Local Intelligence Unit have also been informed.

A suspected Pakistan-origin drone was sighted along the International Border in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, on Sunday, triggering an extensive search operation, officials said.
The drone-like object was seen hovering over forward villages in the Bobiyan area of Hiranagar sector around 10.35 am before appearing to recede towards Pakistan, officials said.
Security forces cordoned off the area and launched searches to rule out the possibility of a payload, including narcotics or weapons, being airdropped. Nothing objectionable was recovered during the operation, officials said.

A 30-year-old Assistant Section Officer in the Ministry of Defence died by suicide at her rented accommodation in southwest Delhi's Dwarka, following which her parents alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws, police said.
Nazia Khanam was found hanging at a flat in Bharthal village in the early hours of August 21. Her family initially did not raise allegations against her matrimonial family but submitted a fresh complaint the following day alleging repeated mental and physical harassment.
Police registered an FIR under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against her husband and other matrimonial family members. The FIR alleges that Khanam was abused, assaulted and threatened and was around three months pregnant. Police said further investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken based on evidence.

A 22-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru following alleged harassment and blackmail by a youth, police said on Sunday.
The woman, identified as Vanishree, was staying at a paying guest accommodation in HSR Layout and worked at a jewellery store. Police said she allegedly left a note naming a person identified as Abhishek and accusing him of harassment and blackmail.
Her family and police later found her body in Agara Lake. Based on a complaint by her sister, HSR Layout police registered a case against Abhishek under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to abetment of suicide. The allegations are being investigated.

A 50-year-old man died after his moving car caught fire near Bariyarpur village on the Lucknow-Ayodhya highway in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district on Sunday, police said.
Eyewitnesses said smoke suddenly began emerging from the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames within minutes. The driver was trapped inside as the car's doors reportedly jammed. The charred body recovered from the vehicle was identified as Rajnarayan.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. A preliminary probe suggests a short circuit may have caused the fire, while a technical examination of the vehicle is underway to determine the exact cause and why the doors became locked.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana has faced criticism after a purported video showed him walking away while the national anthem was being played at an event in Unnao on Saturday.
The video shows Mahana stepping down from the dais after the guard of honour and proceeding towards his vehicle as the anthem continued. Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders criticised him and demanded an explanation.
Mahana, however, denied disrespecting the anthem, saying the national anthem was not played at the spot where he had received the guard of honour. He questioned whether people must stop and stand at attention while passing through a venue where the anthem is being played.

One Indian national was killed and nine others injured after a vehicle veered off the road in Oman on Saturday, the Royal Oman Police said.
The incident took place on Sultan Said bin Teymur Street. Police said their Air Wing transported two of the injured from Al Hema Governorate to Nizwa Hospital, while all nine injured were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The police did not provide details on the cause of the accident. Local reports had earlier said authorities warned of low visibility due to thunderstorms, heavy rain and blowing dust on the highway.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday said the Centre had denied him permission to travel to the US for "political reasons", forcing him to return to Hyderabad from London instead of proceeding to Boston.
In a post on X, Reddy thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, his party colleagues and supporters across the country for backing him over the issue. He said he had completed his meetings and scheduled events in London over the past three days.
Reddy said he would take a flight to Hyderabad in a few hours and address the issues related to the denied permission after returning home.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday laid the foundation for five projects worth nearly Rs 3,500 crore at a GRSE programme in Kolkata. Singh said West Bengal can usher in a “new renaissance of development”. He also said the global shipbuilding industry has a vacuum that India can fill, adding that the country has the potential to become global shipbuilding hub.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said previous governments in the state did not work with the Centre for its development. Speaking at a GRSE programme in Kolkata, he said "50 years of negativity" had ended. Adhikari said the state’s "double-engine government" would now ensure development in West Bengal.
The Rajasthan government has ordered construction of a new building for a government primary school in Jaipur’s Rampura village from September 1. The government has sanctioned Rs 18 lakh for the project. The announcement came days after a Cockroach Janata Party team’s visit to the village turned violent. FIRs have been registered by both sides over the confrontation. CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said the party’s immediate demand had been addressed.

The Indian Coast Guard has intensified search and rescue operations for 22 crew members after a Panama-flagged bulk carrier sank in the Bay of Bengal. The MV Ocean Winner sank on August 22, around 230 nautical miles from Odisha’s Paradip coast. It was carrying 20 Chinese, three Myanmarese and one Bangladeshi crew member. Two crew members have been rescued from separate liferafts. The Coast Guard has deployed three ships to search for the remaining crew.

A 32-year-old woman was found hanging at her in-laws’ home in Ashoknagar, North 24 Parganas, on Sunday, police said. The woman, identified as Riya Pal, was found at her home. Police detained her husband and mother-in-law for questioning. Local residents and BJP workers gathered outside the police station and demanded strict action.
