At least three workers were trapped in an under construction traffic tunnel on Kiratpur-Nerchowk-Manali National Highway at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh when a portion of the tunnel caved on Saturday night.

Superintendent of police (Bilaspur) Balbir Thakur, who was camping at the site, told The Indian Express that the tunnel caved in due to sudden seepage of excess water. The debris falling from the upper portion of the tunnel blocked the passage. The workers got struck inside the tunnel.

Nearly 25 to 30 workers were on duty but after their shift was over most of the them barring three – those trapped inside – had come out of the work place. All three are Himachalis, two of them from Mandi district and one hailing from Sirmaur.

The tunnel was being built by Himalayan Construction company, which has vast experience in the construction of the tunnels in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur said.

Rescue operations were on to save the lives of the workers. As more and more debris are coming down from the damaged portion of the tunnel, its face remains completely blocked. The company has pressed into service all its men and machinery to clear the blocked passage and bring the trapped workers out.
