Just over five months after his marriage with former Bihar chief minister Daroga Rai’s granddaughter Aishwarya Rai, Tej Pratap Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA, Lalu Prasad’s elder son and a former Bihar minister, has filed an application in a family court here for divorce, apparently citing reasons of incompatibility.
The court will take up the matter for hearing on November 29.
Confirming that the application for divorce (case number 1208) has been filed, Tej Pratap’s lawyer, Yashwant Kumar Sharma, told the media on Friday, “The application letter is filed under the header ‘petition under Section 13 (1) (ia) of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, as amended up to date for grant of decree of divorce on the ground of cruelty’.”
Pointing out that there are two modes of application — one filed by both parties in mutual agreement and the other by one party — Sharma said in this case Tej Pratap has filed the application seeking divorce.
“I cannot give much details. I was only told by my client that he and his wife were not compatible and hence he wanted divorce,” Sharma was quoted by PTI.
While leaving the civil court premises, Tej Pratap’s cavalcade was stopped by waiting journalists but the RJD leader, who wore a small bandage over his forehead, did not take any questions, PTI reported.
Tej Pratap Yadav initially left for Ranchi to meet his ailing father, but reportedly returned to his mother and former Bihar CM Rabri Devi’s residence — 10, Circular Road — after Rabri Devi and other family members persuaded him.
Rajya Sabha member and Tej Pratap’s elder sister Misa Bharati also reached Patna and went to Rabri Devi’s residence. “Aishwarya’s father Chandrika Rai (a former minister in the JDU-RJD-Congress Grand Alliance government) and Aishwarya Rai have been trying for a patch-up and sort out the matter within the family,” according to an insider at 10, Circular Road.
Aishwarya and Chandrika Rai visited Rabri Devi’s residence on Friday evening and refused to take questions, PTI reported.
Sources close to Lalu Prasad said there had been an “uneasy relationship between the two ever since they got married”. An RJD leader who has worked closely with Tej Pratap said, “Comparability, differences in lifestyle and political ambition could be possible reasons. While Aishwarya is an MBA and had graduated from Patna’s elite school – Notre Dame Academy – Tej studied up to only Class XII…. He is known to be temperamental.”
Aishwarya is also a good speaker but has thus far not taken part in any political activity for the RJD, insiders said.
RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tewary told The Indian Express, “This is something we can neither confirm nor deny. It involves Tej Pratap-ji and Aishwarya-ji, and only they can confirm or deny the news.”
Tej Pratap and Aishwarya got married in Patna on May 12, with political leaders across the spectrum attending the ceremony, including Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.
The wedding was touted as a great “political tie-up” between two politically powerful families.
