A 35-year-old senior manager at the Faridabad office of Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Ltd (TSPDL), located inside the Tata Steel stockyard in the city, was shot dead on Friday afternoon, with police saying a former employee — fired from his post as “executive” about “four-five months ago” — is behind the crime. The accused fled the scene after the incident, and police have started raids to nab him.
According to police, the victim, Arindam Pal, hails from Kolkata and was senior manager (supply chain) at the stockyard located in Faridabad’s New Industrial Township (NIT) area. He lived in Sainik Colony with his wife and daughter.
The accused, Vishwash Pandey, hails from Allahabad, and had been sacked on the basis of a report submitted by the victim, police said.
“The company had started an inquiry against Pandey and relieved him of his services four to five months ago, on grounds of indiscipline. The report of the inquiry, on the basis of which he was sacked, was submitted by the deceased,” said Sube Singh, PRO of Faridabad police. “It is suspected that Pandey held a grudge against him for this reason, and murdered him in revenge. Other employees who were on the premises during the incident have identified him, and the FIR in the case has been registered against him by name,” he said.
The incident took place around 1.10 pm, when the shift was being changed at the stockyard. Police said the accused entered the premises through the main gate and went into Pal’s cabin, where he allegedly opened fire and shot him “five times in the stomach” before escaping through another gate at the yard.
“Pal was rushed to Fortis Escorts Hospital in NIT, where he was declared dead… His wife, who had gone to Kolkata for Diwali with her daughter, has been informed about the incident, and is expected to reach Faridabad later tonight. The post-mortem will be conducted on Saturday,” said Ashok Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Mujesar police station, where a case has been registered regarding the matter under IPC section 302 (murder).
“As of now, it is unclear how long the victim and the accused had been employed with the company. We intend to access company records to get a clearer picture of this. We hope to nab the accused soon,” he said. An official statement from Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Ltd (TSPDL) revealed that Pandey had been with the company for around three years.
“Mr Vishwash Pandey, 32, worked with TSPDL from 2015 till 2018. He was discharged from the services of the company in August 2018. After shooting Mr Pal, he immediately ran out of the office and is still at large… The company extends its condolences to the family of Mr Pal and is extending all possible support and help to the family at this time of crisis,” read the statement.
Police sources said that other employees at the stockyard claimed the accused was “aggressive” in nature, and had a tendency to get into conflicts with colleagues and seniors at the company.
