Unlike other Tamil actor-turned-politicians, who continued their acting career even after joining politics, Vijay has hinted that he would become a full-time politician.
The announcement was made through a detailed statement released by the actor on social media platforms. It marks a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s long-prevalent tradition of its cinematic and political realms intertwining.
Regarding his vision for the party, Vijay’s statement laid emphasis on a commitment to transparency, non-partisan governance, and adherence to the values of Tamil culture and the Indian Constitution.
Highlighting the challenges facing the state, including corruption and divisive politics, Vijay said, “On one side, there is a culture of politics tainted with corruption and administrative malpractices, while on the other, there is a divisive political culture striving to fragment our people through caste and religious differences…”
He said the party would not take part in the coming Lok Sabha elections, and that it would instead focus on strengthening its grassroots presence and preparing for a meaningful political debut. He promised that TVK would contest in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay also said he wished to “fully immerse” himself in politics. “…as far as I am concerned, politics is not just another profession; it is a sacred service to the people… Therefore, politics is not a pastime for me; it is my deep passion. I wish to fully immerse myself in politics for public service after completing my commitments to another film I have already committed to, without causing any disruption to party activities. This is what I consider my gratitude and duty to the people of Tamil Nadu,” his statement said.

According to the statement, “the goal is to facilitate the fundamental political changes desired by the people”.
“Taking into account the necessary time for the Election Commission’s approval and party expansion activities, our application for party registration has been submitted now. It has also been decided in the general body and the executive committee that we will not contest in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections and that we do not support any party, which I humbly convey here,” he said.
The announcement comes at a time when Vijay, at 49, aligns with a younger generation of politicians looking to make an impact in the state’s political arena. His foray into politics is seen as a significant departure from his previously perceived reticence. When asked about his seemingly shy nature in personal transactions, a top source close to him said, “Such people can have a really aggressive face too.”
Vijay’s political journey is not an isolated endeavour, but follows a rich legacy of actors-turned-politicians in Tamil Nadu, a lineage that includes luminaries such as M G Ramachandran (MGR), J Jayalalithaa, Vijayakanth, and more recently, Kamal Haasan. However, Vijay’s approach and messaging suggest a deliberate effort to carve a distinct path, one that leverages his cinematic appeal while addressing critical social and political issues head-on.

Vijay’s announcement has been met with enthusiasm from his vast fan base, which spans across Southern states and age groups, unlike the older demographic typically associated with other cinematic figures who ventured into politics. This broad support base, combined with his clear messaging and political positioning, makes his decision significant as he is a star who stands on par with Rajinikanth, who emerged as the biggest superstar after MGR.
MGR may be the only actor-turned-politician whose popularity can be compared to Vijay’s, with others such as Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan, while revered actors, did not have the fanbase of a superstar nor the market pull and influence that comes with such stardom.
