The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that there “is a further legal issue” that remained to be resolved in the United Kingdom before Vijay Mallya can be extradited to India.

A bench headed by Justice U U Lalit, which had held the fugitive businessman guilty of contempt and directed his appearance, posted the matter for further hearing on March 15, after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought more time to file a report on the status of the extradition process.

Mehta told the bench that the government is trying its best. “From political executive level to administrative level, the matter is being looked into repeatedly at the highest level”, he said.

The SG also shared a letter from the Ministry of External Affairs’ with the court in this connection. The communication said that “the Ministry…has been informed by the UK government that there is a further legal issue that needs resolving before Mallya can be extradited”. The letter also outlined efforts by the government in the matter.
