The complainant alleged that one of Yambem’s close associates threatened her using a licensed pistol belonging to the journalist. The Manipur Police Monday arrested senior journalist Laba Yambem, also a former member of the Manipur Human Rights Commission, from his residence in Imphal after a woman filed a complaint of criminal intimidation against him.
The complainant alleged that one of Yambem’s close associates threatened her using a licensed pistol belonging to the journalist. Yambem was booked for attempt to murder, and criminal intimidation, among others, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile, Yambem’s lawyer has alleged that he has not been produced before the magistrate concerned. The lawyer said the police approached the judge seeking permission to produce Yambem via video conference citing the law-and-order situation late on Monday evening. However, the lawyer objected to the appeal of the police and demanded that Yambem be physically produced.
“This raises serious concerns about the manner in which the investigating authorities are handling the matter,” said the daughter of the journalist complaining about the ‘delay’ in Yambem’s production before the magistrate.
Notably, Yambem formed a political party called the Good Governance Party in July. Nearly two months after the formation of the party, Yambem’s house came under attack from armed miscreants in September.
