Senior advocate R Venkataramani is new Attorney General for India

Venkataramani will succeed K K Venugopal, whose term as the Attorney General for India ends on September 30

The Centre on Wednesday notified the appointment of Senior Advocate R Venkataramani as the 16th Attorney General for India. He will succeed K K Venugopal whose term comes to an end on September 30. Venkataramani appointment is for a period of three years.

Venkataramani got enrolled as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in July 1977 and started practising in the Supreme Court in 1979. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 1997.

In 2010, he was appointed member of the Law Commission, and reappointed for a further term in 2013. Venkataramani practised in various branches of law, including constitutional, indirect taxes, human rights, civil and criminal, consumer, and service law.

He has represented the Central government, different state governments, universities and public sector undertakings before the Supreme Court and high courts in key cases.

Outgoing Attorney General K K Venugopal had succeeded Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi as the 15th AG in July 2017 for three years. When his three-year tenure came to an end in 2020, 91-year-old Venugopal had requested that he be relieved of his post citing his age. However, the Central government requested him to continue and kept extending his tenure. On his third extension, he told the government that he didn’t want to continue after September 30.
