Manipur asks Centre for helicopters after two security personnel killed in state

The violence in the border town of Moreh in Manipur escalated on Wednesday with the killing of two police personnel after which Manipur Home Department Commissioner requested the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for helicopters for medical emergencies and to airlift troops and weaponry to the area.

In the second incident of killing of Meitei police personnel in Moreh in two-and-a-half months, Wangkhem Somorjit, an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawan attached to Manipur police commandos deployed in the town, and Takhellambam Saileshwor, a havildar, were killed in an incident around 3.25 am.

According to the police, they had been deployed at an IRB post near the Kondong Lairembi Devi Mandir at the time and the assailants attacked it using grenades, followed by a volley of firing. Along with them, two other personnel also suffered injuries in the attack.
