The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a petition which sought disqualification of PM Narendra Modi from the Lok Sabha elections for allegedly flouting the Model Code of Conduct by invoking religion in his speech.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Satish Chandra Sharma allowed the petitioner Fatima to withdraw the plea.

The court told the petitioner’s counsel that she had approached the SC directly without approaching the Election Commision of India first.

“Don’t come under Article 32/226 like this. You must approach authority. If you want to withdraw, we will permit you,” said Justice Nath.
