With merely 25 days left for cashless payments at highway toll plazas to begin throughout India, NHAI authorities urged people to obtain the FASTags manually and digitally from their respective banks, counters which have been opened at almost all toll plazas, or by downloading FASTag mobile application.

At Dappar toll plaza, authorities started accepting the FASTags on a trial basis from November 1 but have been receiving very low response. At Chandimandir toll plaza on the Zirakpur-Kalka-Shimla express highway, lanes for vehicles carrying Fastag were increased. Four lanes were made including two on each sides.

NHAI Project Director, KL Sachdeva, said, “The main misconception about the FASTag among people is about its one time utility. People assume that if t they don’t frequent toll plazas, then the fastags are of no use. They do not understand that one fastag can be used anywhere across the country. Whenever the money is deducted, people will receive an SMS on their cell phone. Three counters of different banks were set up near the Dappar Toll plaza, to allow people to purchase the fastag stickers. The stickers will be pasted on the windshields of their vehicles.”

The FASTag is enabled with the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), and will linked with the registration details of the vehicle. These tags are part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Sources said that people with no FASTags will automatically be stuck in traffic jams at toll plazas.

How to obtain a FASTag

A person can purchase the FASTag of the desired cost from any bank. On crossing a toll plaza, the toll fee will automatically be deducted through the RFID equipped FASTag. The person will receive an SMS on his/her cell phone. People can also procure the fastag by applying through the FASTag App downloading it from Google playstore. The FASTag carrying info about their vehicles will delivered at their corresponding address.
