ALLOTTMENT OF a room for offering namaz in Jharkhand assembly led to protests by opposition BJP MLAs, who disrupted proceedings on the first day of Monsoon Session on Monday.
Before the session began, the BJP MLAs sat with placards on the stairs at the entrance of the assembly, chanting Hanuman Chalisa and “Hare Rama”. As soon as the proceedings began, they stepped into the Well, shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans. They demanded recall of the order related to allotment of the namaz room.
Speaker Ravindra Nath Mahto urged the protesting MLAs to return to their seats. As the ruckus continued, he adjourned the House till 12.45 pm.
On Sunday, BJP workers had burnt effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the Speaker during protests. BJP MLA CP Singh said: “According to me, there should be a grand temple in the [assembly] premises.”
Asked why the “namaz room” should not be renamed as “prayer room”, CM Soren said: “Nothing will happen even if this is done… if there is faith in one’s mind, there is God. But if there is a demon in one’s mind, there will be problem everywhere.”
