Srinagar-Leh highway closed due to heavy snowfall

The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed since morning because of snowfall at Zojilla and Gumri.

The Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the frontier Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was today closed for traffic following heavy snowfall at Zojilla Pass and Gumri here, officials said.

“The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed since this morning because of snowfall at Zojilla and Gumri,” an official of the State Traffic Department said.

The 434-km long highway, which is the only road link between rest of the state and the Leh and Kargil towns, acts as a major lifeline to the frontier region.

The Zojilla Pass,140 kms from here,is a vital crossing point on the mountainous Srinagar-Leh highway and receives the heaviest snowfall in winter, shutting it down for nearly six months each year.
