Solemn prayers,processions mark Good Friday in Kerala

Hundreds of devotees recall the great sacrifice made by Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago.

Christians in Kerala on Friday observed Good Friday with solemn prayers,fast and penance,commemorating the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Special prayers and Good Friday processions were held across the state under churches of Catholic and other denominations in which faithful participated in hundreds recalling the great sacrifice made by Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago.

The “Stations of the Cross processions” were held in many places recalling the final journey of Christ to Calvary before Crucifixion. Senior prelates led the prayers and processions in different centres.

Hundreds of devotees,including women and children,bearing wooden crosses ascended St Thomas Church atop the hillock at Malayattoor in Ernakulam district,believed to have been sanctified by the visit of Apostle St Thomas,who preached Christ’s message in India.

In Kerala,majority of Catholics as well as churches that follow Oriental traditions trace their origin to the landing of St Thomas on the Kerala coast to preach the Gospel in the first century AD.
