Shrine destruction an extremely bad conspiracy: Clerics

A 2-day shutdown in the Valley beginning on Thursday.

The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir and his Deputy today claimed that the destruction of Dastgeer Sahib shrine in the old city was an “extremely worst conspiracy” and accused the state government of distorting the evidence.

Grand Mufti Mohammad Bashiruddin has called for a 2-day shutdown in the Valley beginning on Thursday and a Friday march to Khanyar where the shrine was located.

“The president of the state Muslim Personal Law Board,Grand Mufti Mohammad Bashiruddin, and other ulemas (clerics) have taken a serious notice that what has happened is a result of an extremely worst conspiracy,” Nasir-ul-Islam,Deputy to Bashiruddin, told reporters.

Islam accused the government of distorting the evidence and said this was a serious issue. He asked the government to come out with a statement identifying the culprits.

The distortion of evidence has taken place (by washing the gutted shrine compound and clearance of debris overnight),it is a very serious issue for us.

“The Chief Minister has said they will reconstruct the shrine,we do not want any support from the Chief Minister. We have resources to build greater place than this one,” Islam said. Bashiruddin, who read out a statement on behalf of the Supreme Court of Islamic Shariat, said they were not ruling out a “conspiracy”.

“The situation we are facing today is surprising and tense. Deep conspiracy cannot be ruled out in burning of the shrine,” he said.

Bashiruddin said people were not having any expectation from the “traditional probe” ordered by the government.

Without elaborating, the Grand Mufti pointed a finger of suspicion towards elements who have been issuing threats on the Internet.

He alleged that laziness and weak security system of the Muslim Wakf Board,in charge of the maintenance of most shrines in the Valley, were responsible for the burning of the 200-year-old Dastgeer Sahib shrine.

“It seems Wakf Board is only interested in collecting money,” he said.

Bashiruddin asked the government to strengthen security measures around other shrines in the Valley.
