Although the situation is still far from being normal, there has been a slight improvement in the power scenario in Uttarakhand. The state has been reeling under a power crises on account of a sharp decline in the power generation because of scanty snowfall in the winter months coupled with very little rain in the last few months.

According to the figures of the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) power generation in the state has improved from 13.8 Million Units (MU) on June 20 to 18.06 MU on June 25,thus providing some relief to the state.

The panic that had gripped the state following the continuous receding of water levels in the Tehri dam was also dispelled to some extent on Friday when a small rise in the water levels was recorded. It is learnt that some rainfall recorded in the Uttarkashi district led to flowing of water in the catchment area of the dam raising its level to more than 742.5 meters.

“We will never allow the water level to fall below the 740 meter mark. It the water level moves towards this mark,we will reduce generation. Shortage of water has already compelled us to reduce the generation to 3.5 MU. Things are just being managed,” said AL Shah who is the General Manager (Generation),Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC). He further added that fluctuations in the water level are a continuous process.

The power crisis in the state has been compelling it to over draw from the Northern Grid. The normal practice is that Uttarakhand banks power with other states like Delhi,Haryana,Punjab and Uttar Pradesh during the summer months and takes it back during the winters. But at present it is banking just 0.52 MU daily with Punjab and this banking has just started from June 14. Till now it has just banked 8.3 MU.

Things are expected to improve with rains coming to the state. Besides Uttarkashi, some rain was also received in parts of Kumaon adjoining Pithoragarh till Friday morning providing much needed respite. The state is looking forward to the arrival of the monsoon.
