Opposition PDP today lashed out at civil society including Anna Hazare for maintaining silence over the allegations of political corruption in Jammu and Kashmir and custodial death of a National Conference worker.
“The response of the civil society in the country,including Anna Hazare,has been that of indifference,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told PTI.
Mehbooba said the death of National Conference worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf in custody of Crime Branch last week has given the impression that one can literally get away with murder in Jammu and Kashmir.
“In the case of (Congress leaders) Shashi Tharoor and Ashok Chavan,they had to step down when allegations of corruption were levelled against them. However,the same yardstick is not applied to our state,” she said.
She said the allegations of corruption and custodial death of Yousuf are not coming from her party but people associated with the ruling party.
Mehbooba said the state of Jammu and Kashmir was being meted out “step motherly” treatment at all levels by the nation. “The names of rape victims were revealed by the government in the Assembly but there was not even a murmur from the women’s rights organisations,” she said.
The PDP president warned that ignoring the developments in Jammu and Kashmir could have serious consequences in the long run. “The Kashmiris are today feeling alienated. In the long run,it will hurt the entire nation,” she added.
