Nine people including 2 children and 3 women were killed and 10 others injured in a road mishap early Friday morning in central Orissa distict of Dhenkanal after a coal-laden truck ran over a passenger trekker on NH-42.
The passengers in the trekker including the driver were returning from Khuntuni in Cuttack district to Dhenkanal after watching an opera at night. Eight people were killed on the spot while one more died in a hospital of Dhenkanal.
Police officials in Dhenkanal said the accident occurred at the temple of Goddess Mallikeswari along the NH when the trekker rammed into the truck coming from the other side at about 5.15 am. The trekker driver,who was sleepless,seemed to have lost control of the vehicle. Hearing the shrieks of the passengers,locals rushed to the spot and helped evacuate the injured. Later the injured were taken to the hospital by fire tenders.
Five of the injured are said to be critical. The driver of the coal-laden truck is absconding.
After the accident,traffic movements in the National Highway came to a standstill with over 500 trucks and buses stranded on both sides of the accident spot.
