CPI(M) accuses EC observers of turning a blind eye

CPI(M) wondered why the EC had decided to send a team when polls had not even been declared.

The ruling CPI(M) in West Bengal on Saturday alleged that the Election Commission team of observers,mostly police officers,sent to assess the law and order situation in the poll-bound state were partial.

“The team went to Howrah district but did not go to Udyanarainpur where CPI(M) members are being attacked by both Trinamool Congress and Congress workers,” CPI(M) leader Mohammad Selim told reporters on the sidelines of the party’s two-day state committee meeting,which kicked-off here on Saturday.

He questioned why the EC observers,who had arrived on January 15 and left on Friday,should be “one-sided” while taking stock of the law and order situation. “The duty of the observers should have been to make their observation neutrally,” Selim said.

He described as unprecedented the EC’s decision to send a team when elections were yet to be declared.

Meanwhile,the state committee meeting — which was participated by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose among others — discussed the party’s poll preparedness and Maoist attacks,CPI(M) insiders said.
