A tip-off warned cops that the gang was holed up in a state housing board apartment since last December. The police surrounded the area a little after 1 am on Thursday and called for the men to come out. The gang replied with fire and were soon shot dead by the armed cops.

The gang of five was led by Bihar youth Vinod Kumar, who had studied engineering in Chennai. He stayed back in the city after completing the course, working as an agent to bring students from north India. This earned him a handsome commission, the police said.

The cops had recently released a video clip and photos of him on a recce mission at another bank which had closed circuit television unlike the two banks which were eventually targetted.

The others have been identified as Vinay Prasad,Abhay Kumar and Harish Kumar from Bihar, and Chandrika Ray from West Bengal.
