Assam woman Cong candidate richer than BJP counterpart

Ranee Narah of the Congress and Bijoya Chakraborty of the BJP share the distinction of being the sole women candidates of their respective parties in Assam,but that is about all they have in common.

Narah,a two-time MP from Lakhimpur constituency,is richer than her counterpart Chakraborty,who had won the Guwahati parliamentary seat in 1999 and went on to become the Union Minister of State for Water Resources in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Narah is a ‘crorepati’ with cash deposits in banks and financial institutions amounting to Rs 1.34 crore while her husband Bharat Narah,who is the minister for culture,sports and youth affairs in the state cabinet,has cash and bank deposits amounting to Rs 6.38 lakh.

Chakraborty,according to her declaration of assets,keeps no cash in hand and has deposits in bank and financial institutions amounting to Rs 1,80,000. Her husband has bank deposits worth Rs 90,000.

The former Union minister has only one fixed deposit in bank worth Rs one lakh.

Narah’s wealth is not confined to cash and bank deposits,but she has shares worth Rs 50,000 while her husband has shares worth Rs two lakh.

Narah,who lost the 2004 elections to AGP’s Arun Sarmah,has four insurance policies for an assured amount of Rs 6,50,500 while her husband is insured for a much higher amount of Rs 16,93,545.

The former MP also appears to have a penchant for vehicles and owns four-wheelers worth Rs 30,09,695 while her husband has a modest vehicle worth Rs 1,70,000. Her counterpart from the BJP and her spouse owns no vehicle.

Narah owns jewellery worth Rs 1,10,000 while her spouse owns more jewellery worth Rs 1,50,000. Chakraborty owns 30 gm of jewellery whose worth was not ascertained.

Both Narah and Chakraborty along with their respective spouses own no agricultural land,though they have stakes in non-agricultural land.

Chakraborty owns non-agricultural land in Chinaki Nagar of Guwahati worth Rs 300,000 and her spouse has land in the Srinagar area here worth Rs 2,50,000.

Narah owns four plots of non-agricultural land in Assam worth Rs 10,38,450 while her husband owns three plots of land worth Rs 8,30,000.

She also owns property in New Delhi worth Rs 19,080,000 while her spouse also owns a house in South Extension in the national capital worth Rs 15,000,000.

Both Chakraborty and Narah,however,have no loans or dues outstanding.
