The AIADMK and the CPI formalised an expected alliance here on Sunday. Senior CPI leaders A B Bardhan and Sudhakar Reddy held discussions with the AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence before announcing the decision to contest the election together as a “secular and democratic alternative”.
The CPM is expected to follow suit after Prakash Karat’s scheduled meeting with her on Monday.
“AIADMK and CPI have decided to enter into an alliance to face the upcoming Lok Sabha elections together,” Jayalalithaa, flanked by Bardhan, told media. “Our alliance will lead to victory. We will succeed,” said Bardhan.
With the AIADMK leaders are projecting Jayalalithaa as PM candidate, a question from the media in this regard was inevitable. “If we succeed in the election, the prospects will open up,” Bardhan replied. But Jayalalithaa hastily intervened and said the aim was to win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. “All that will come later,” added Jayalalithaa .
The two had contested last general and Assembly elections together, and both Left parties received her support to return a candidate each to Rajya Sabha.
The comrades were keen to retain Jaya in their front, as 40 seats from the State and Puducherry could be the game-changer especially in the case of a fractured verdict.
