The Indore police have begun an investigation after getting a complaint against podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia for his allegedly “obscene and vulgar” remarks during comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube reality show ‘India’s Got Latent’, police said on Tuesday.

This came a day after Assam Police registered an FIR against five people, including Allahbadia and Raina, in connection with the same remarks. The Mumbai Police also started an inquiry into the matter but did not register an FIR.

Following widespread uproar after a video of the comments went viral on social media, Allahbadia on Monday apologised for the remarks.

On Tuesday, Tukoganj police station in-charge Jitendra Singh Yadav told The Indian Express that the complaint was filed by local lawyer Aman Malviya. No FIR has been registered yet.

“The matter is under investigation. Appropriate action will be taken after a thorough inquiry. The allegations are that during the comedy show, obscene comments were passed,” Yadav said.

The complainant accused Allahbadia, Raina, and others involved in the show of crossing “all limits of decency” and misusing the right to freedom of expression. Accompanied by several other lawyers, he demanded legal action against the accused and called for a ban on the show.

Allahbadia, 31, who became popular through his YouTube channel ‘BeerBiceps’, posted a video on Monday saying there was a “lapse in judgement” on his part.

“My comment was not just inappropriate. It was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry,” he said in his apology video.
