Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Saturday announced reservation for Agniveers in certain services in the state.
Marking the Kargil Vijay Diwas, held on July 26, Sharma said that the state will have reservation for Agniveers “who protect the borders of the country with the spirit of dedication and patriotism”. He said that the reservation for Agniveers will be in jobs for state police, jail guards and forest guards.
However, the percentage of reservation has not yet been disclosed.
Ever since it was rolled out in 2022, there has been opposition to the Agniveer scheme from some quarters. Under the scheme, eligible youths between the ages of 17.5 and 21 years, are enrolled in the Indian Army, Indian Navy or the Indian Air Force for a period of four years.
Dissatisfaction with the scheme in parts of Rajasthan had translated into a vote for Opposition, especially in the state’s Shekhawati belt. In the Lok Sabha elections, overall, the Opposition managed to win 11 seats of the 25 in Rajasthan. While the BJP had won all the 25 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in 2019, the NDA constituents bagged all the seats of Rajasthan.
Rajasthan joins other BJP ruled states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, etc, who have announced similar decisions to mark the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
