Centre to review security of officers involved in Operation Bluestar
New Delhi:The Centre has convened a high- level meeting next week to review the security of Lt Gen (Retd) K S Brar and others who were involved in the 1984 Operation Bluestar against Sikh militants in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The meeting,to be chaired by Union Home Secretary R K Singh and to be attended by Army,Maharashtra Police and others,will also review whether there was any security lapse anywhere leading to the assassination attempt on 78-year-old Brar on Sunday. Security of other Army officers,who were involved in the operation to flush out militants hiding in Golden Temple,will also be reviewed in the meeting. Ever since the Operation Bluestar,the Army soldiers are guarding the officers,who were leading it,on the basis of the security assessment made by the Home Ministry.
School grant: Now BJP flak for Sukhbir
Amritsar:After Congress leader Sukhpal Khaira cried foul and threatened to move court over the Rs 1 crore ‘development grant’ by Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal to Lawrence School at Sanawar where he (Sukhbir) studied,former minister and senior leader of SAD’s alliance partner BJP Laxmi Kanta Chawala,on Friday,too questioned the grant to Lawrence School from the state exchequer. In a statement,Chawla said that it was good that Sukhbir was giving money to the institution from where he studied. “But,the question is that the owner of property worth crores of rupees,Sukhbir could have given the money from his own personal income,” Chawla added. SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said: “The decision was taken after the approval of Punjab Cabinet and there is nothing wrong in it,” Cheema added.
Graft: Absconding DSP surrenders
Ludhiana:After being on the run for 25 days,DSP Gurcharan Singh,who was booked by the Vigilance Bureau for accepted a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to give a favourbale report to motor vehicle inspector Rajesh Kumar Gupta,surrendered in a Mohali court late on Thursday. Gurcharan was booked on September 11 and had been absconding.
Shinde to visit J&K,Punjab
New Delhi:Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will visit Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab beginning October 6 to review the security situation in forward areas along Indo-Pakistan border,including Kargil. The Home Minister will visit forward border guarding posts in Leh,Kargil and Attari-Wagah and interact with jawans and officers posted there.
MHA to look into state law,order
Chandigarh:The leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Jakhar met the Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday to ask him to look into the law and order situation in the state. “The Ministry of Home Affairs will look into the issue,” he said adding that SAD-BJP government had created a environment of fear by letting radial elements build the Bluestar memorial. Meanwhile,SAD general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra alleged that Amarinder Singh himself had raised the demand for a memorial to Operation Bluestar when he headed the Akali Dal (Panthic).
12 cheques seized by VB in RDF scam case
Amritsar:Vigilance Bureau,on Friday,found as many as 12 unused cheques with a collective worth of nearly Rs 9 lakh during a search of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar residence of Harjit Singh,the brother-in-law of Sarbdyal Singh,in connection with Rs 1.15 crore RDF embezzlement case. VB Bureau SSP Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said that four rubber stamps of sarpanches were also recovered during the raid.
Dal Khalsa slams Congress,BJP,Brar
Hoshiarpur:Dal Khalsa on Friday condemned the statements of the Congress,BJP and Gen (retd) KS Brar opposing the memorial of Sikh martyrs,and said there was no threat to peace. “Brar’s theory that the so-called assault on him in London is linked to the construction of the memorial in Amritsar holds no water. Brar is playing to the tunes of his masters,who are hell bent to jeopardise the work of the memorial,” party chief H S Dhami said.
