Bathinda farmer suicide: Dharna continues, union seeks compensation for family of deceased

The unions said the body will not be cremated until a compensation of Rs 10 lakh is granted to the kin of the deceased.

A DAY after a farmer, Kuldeep Singh, committed suicide during a sit-in dharna organised by eight farmer unions in Bathinda, the unions said the body will not be cremated until a compensation of Rs 10 lakh is granted to the kin of the deceased.

Other demands are a waiver of Rs 8-lakh loan that the deceased had taken and a job for a family member. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot,

In the past two months, nearly 10 farmers of Bathinda and nearby areas have committed suicide due to cotton crop failure.

The government has so far not taken any serious action, alleged Bharti Kisan Union (Ugrahan) Bathinda president Shingara Singh Mann.

He said talks were on with the district administration but no consensus has been reached yet.

He added, “We also demand police action against the officials concerned because the deceased categorically mentioned that the Punjab Government was responsible for his taking the extreme step.”

However, Bathinda DC Dr Basant Garg said, “We have sent the case details to the state government for suitable compensation as per government rules.”
