Six people including an ordinance factory employee were killed in an explosion on Tuesday while destroying 23mm ammunition near Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) in Pulgaon in Wardha district of Maharashtra. At least 10 persons were injured in the blast which occurred between 6 and 7 am.
Two labourers were also among the deceased and the toll is likely to rise. The incident happened when some unserviceable ammunition from the ordinance factory in Khamaria near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh was brought to Pulgaon for controlled destruction.
A defence official said, “As the Ordnance Factory in Khamaria does not have the adequate facility needed for controlled destruction, it was brought to a demolition near CAD Pulgaon, where it is generally done. The primary information suggests that the accident took place during this process. Three persons including a staffer of Ordnance factory have been killed and four more have been injured. This initial information, as the injured are being treated. Other the ordnance factory staffer, others are villagers.”

'The blast occurred as soon as one of the boxes was unloaded from truck'
Sonegaon villagers told The Indian Express that two contractors from Pulgaon, Ashok and Shankar Chandak, hire villagers to unload the blast material and lower it into 12 pits, where the OF staffers carry out the blast. “But this blast occurred as soon as one of the boxes was unloaded from the truck,” said Vijay Sahare, who claims he was standing a little away from the truck, said.

Spread over several acres, the site was barricaded last year as people from nearby villages used to visit it to collect scrap iron and brass remnants of the destroyed explosives. The site, according to an official of CAD, is a common blasting site for various defence establishments. The Wardha District Collector said there was no threat or danger of fire spreading as the dismantling site is outside the CAD depot.
Nagpur IG says inquiry will be conducted and legal actions will be initiated accordingly
KMM Prasanna also said, "At this stage, we have filed a case of accidental death pending probe. A thorough inquiry will be conducted and accordingly, legal action will be initiated."
The 10 injured in Pulgaon blast are out of danger now
Speaking to The Indian Express over phone, KMM Prasanna, the Inspector General of Police for Nagpur range, confirmed that six persons were killed and 10 others were injured. "Of the 10, the nature of injuries of the four was serious but they are said to be out of danger. The injuries of six other are not serious. All are being treated at a hospital in Sawangi area in Wardha."

In 2016, 17 persons were killed in fire inside CAD Pulgaon campus
The Wardha District Collector said there was no threat or danger of fire spreading as the dismantling site is outside the CAD depot. It may be recalled that in May 2016, in a major fire inside the CAD Pulgaon campus, 17 persons including two Army officers and 15 Defence Security Corps personnel were killed and 19 others injured. The deceased have been identified
The deceased were identified as Rajkumar Rahul Bahute, Prabhakar Ramdas Wankhede, Narayan Shamrao Kachare, Pravin Prakash Munjewar, Vilas lakshmanrao Pachare, and staffer Udayveer Singh. Of the 10 injured, four are in critical condition.
