Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the four new labour codes introduced by the central government. Terming the laws “exploitative” and “anti-worker”, Gandhi said that these codes were a ploy to strip workers of their hard-earned rights and protections.
“In the name of simplifying labor laws, the central government has brought in 4 new labor codes. Under this pretext, the government has snatched away all the rights that workers had in their hands. The protections previously granted to workers have been taken away, and new avenues for their exploitation have been opened,” she said in a post on X.

“Through these laws, Narendra Modi ji’s pro-capitalist and anti-worker mindset has once again come to the fore. The country does not accept these laws. The Indian National Congress, along with the entire opposition, held protests today against these exploitative laws,” the Congress MP added.
Earlier in the day, the Opposition INDIA bloc leaders protested against codes outside Parliament, ahead of the 3rd day of the Winter Session. Congress MP Manickam Tagore also moved a motion in the Lok Sabha early today, demanding “immediate discussion, accountability, and a clear timeline for real labour reforms.”
Several Opposition MPs, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, MPs of the Congress, DMK, TMC, Left parties, among others staged a demonstration outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament.
The MPs held a large banner which read: ‘No to Corporate Jungle Raj, Yes to Labour Justice’.
The Centre had last month notified the four labour codes, pending since 2020.
The four labour codes are the Code of Wages (2019, Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020) and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020).
Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had said the new codes will ensure “appointment letters for the youth, equal pay and respect for women, gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year of employment, free annual health check-ups for workers above 40 years of age, double wages for overtime, 100% health security for workers in hazardous sectors, and social justice for workers as per international standards”.
The Congress had alleged that the 29 existing labour-related laws were re-packaged into the four codes.
