The Congress on Tuesday announced Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as its candidate from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, bypoll to which is scheduled for November 13.

Priyanka had campaigned for her brother Rahul Gandhi who contested the seat during the general elections, apart from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency. Rahul Gandhi won both the seats but vacated Wayanad.

The 52-year-old Priyanka’s entry into the political fray comes 20 years after she was first seen by her mother Sonia Gandhi and Rahul’s side during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Her focus remained on Uttar Pradesh, home to Congress’ pocket boroughs Amethi and Rae Bareli.

Meanwhile, the party has named Rahul Mamkootathil as its candidate from Palakkad Assembly seat and Ramya Haridas from Thrissur’s Chelakkara Assembly constituency.

Bypolls to Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat and 47 assembly seats across 14 states will take place on November 13, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday. Bypolls to Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand and Nanded Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra will be held on November 20.

The results will be declared on November 23.
