Sivaraman, the main accused in the fake National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp rape that allegedly took place in a school in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri, died early Friday at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem. His death followed a suicide attempt made before his arrest, police said.
Sivaraman, 30, was arrested on August 19 for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl and sexually harassing several other girls during a fake NCC camp set up at a private school. The unauthorised camp, held from August 5 to 9, involved 41 students, including 17 girls. It was later confirmed that the camp had no approval from the official NCC authorities.
Earlier, police had claimed that Sivaraman suffered two severe fractures – on his leg and hand – after the arrest, due to a fall. He was admitted to the Government Krishnagiri Medical College Hospital. “After his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the Salem hospital, where he was placed on dialysis and later on ventilator support,” said an investigator on condition of anonymity.
Police sources claimed he had made a similar suicide attempt earlier too, before he initiated the unauthorised camp in the first week of August, owing to family problems. “He was admitted in hospital for a few days after that suicide attempt,” the officer said.
Sivaraman’s father, aged 61, meanwhile died in a road accident on Thursday night. Police said he was allegedly riding his moped in an inebriated state.
On Wednesday, a second Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case was filed against Sivaraman after the parents of a 14-year-old girl alleged that he had sexually assaulted her in January at another private school. Sivaraman was also implicated in a cheating case involving a land dispute, with accusations of defrauding Rs 36.20 lakh.
The fake NCC camp case came to light after the parents of one of the girls informed the police. What followed was the arrest of eight people, including the school principal. A multi-disciplinary team has also been established to prevent future incidents of child abuse and provide recommendations to the state government.
Sivaraman’s body was handed over to his family after a postmortem examination on Friday.
Sivaraman was among 11 people, including the school authorities who were arrested by the Bargur All Women police. (Express File)
