The Indian Express Associate Editor Sandeep Singh and Special Correspondent Krishn Kaushik have won the Press Council of India’s National Awards for Excellence in Journalism in the Financial Reporting category for their series of investigative reports on the conflict of interest in the business dealings of then ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO Chanda Kochhar’s family members with companies to which ICICI Bank had loaned hundreds of crores of rupees. The three-part series was published in March-April 2018.
The Indian Express Senior Editor Anuradha Mascarenhas has won the award under the Gender Based Reporting category for her report on how locals in Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh were reaching out to tribal women to ensure zero maternal deaths. It was published in July 2018. Mascarenhas is sharing the award with Ruby Sarkar of Deshbandhu.
Announcing the winners Wednesday, the Press Council of India, in a statement, said the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award for outstanding contribution to journalism has been awarded this year to Gulab Kothari, Chairman of Rajasthan Patrika Private Limited.
Sanjay Saini, Correspondent, Dainik Bhaskar, Mandi, and Raj Chengappa, Group Editorial Director, India Today, are the joint winners in the category of Rural Journalism. Shiva Swarup Awasthi, Senior Reporter of Dainik Jagran, and Anu Abrahim, Sub-Editor of Matrubhumi, Calicut, have been declared winners in the Developmental Reporting category.
P G Unnikrishnan, Senior Photographer, The Mathrubhumi, and Akhil E S, News Photographer, Mathrubhumi, were named winners in the Photo Journalism-Single News Picture category. Sipra Das, Consulting Editor (Photography), India Empire Magazine and Parliamentarian Magazine, has won the ‘Photo Journalism-Photo Feature’ category award. Under the Sports Reporting category, Saurabh Duggal from the Hindustan Times has been named the winner.
