Alleging that the BJP-led government at the Centre was misusing the CBI in the Saradha scam probe, the Trinamool Congress demanded in Lok Sabha that the agency’s control be withdrawn from the Prime Minister and handed over to the Lokpal. In Rajya Sabha, TMC’s Derek O’Brien alleged that a BJP leader is “writing the script for CBI”. The name was expunged as the person is not a House member.
Replying to O’Brien, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said: “There is no question of the government or any leader being involved in what the CBI is doing. The case he is referring to is being monitored by the Supreme Court”.
In Lok Sabha, TMC leader Saugata Roy said when the BJP was in the opposition, it referred to the CBI as “Congress Bureau of Investigation”.
“Now, CBI, on the instigation of those in power and the president of the ruling party, has launched an assault on the Bengal government. They are trying to subjugate the state government by arresting (a) TMC leader (Madan Mitra),” said Roy. He added that the control over the CBI should be withdrawn from the PM and given to the Lokpal.
Responding, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, “Madam, he has made a comment about my party president…I totally condemn it. Secondly, a legal battle cannot be substituted by a political battle. If someone is aggrieved by legal action, other avenues are available”.
