As the results of the Lok Sabha elections trickled in Friday, a group of self-proclaimed Congressmen landed outside the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road demanding Priyanka Gandhi be brought in to save the party.
Among them carrying a placard seeking Priyanka’s entry into politics was Jagdish Sharma, a friend of her businessman husband Robert Vadra. His presence surprised partymen and left many wondering whether Vadra approved of his actions. Sharma’s friendship with Vadra is an open secret in Congress circles. Sharma, however, denied Vadra had any knowledge of his demonstration outside the Congress office. “I am an old Congressman. The demonstration has nothing to do with Robert Vadra,” he said.
Justifying the demand for Priyanka’s entry into politics, Sharma said the scale of the defeat was painful for any partyman and that she would only help her brother Rahul, who was “surrounded by fraudsters now”.
“They don’t allow us to meet him. It is these people who are responsible for the defeat. I went for that rally because I want Priyanka to work with Rahul and guide him. Had she been around, he would not have in this situation,” he said.
