CONGRESS president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday said Congress alone is responsible for creation of Telangana state and that only her party can provide a strong and stable government in the new state to ensure development.
“Your 60-year-old dream has finally come true. I want to be a part of your celebrations. It took us some time to convince some people but Congress made a promise and it has fulfilled it. Both states are close to my heart and Congress promises that both states will get their due share,” she said, kicking off the party campaign in the region from here. She said only Congress was responsible for pushing the Telangana Bill in Parliament and making it the 29th state.
Sonia arrived at Hakimpet Air Force base and took a chopper to Ambedkar Stadium in Karimnagar. Although it is small, the stadium was chosen because it was here that she had promised Telangana state while campaigning in 2009 elections. She was given a grand welcome — and songs eulogizing her as ‘benefactor of Telangana’ were played.
Speaking in Hindi, she hit out at the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Telugu Desam Party. “For some, Telangana must have been a ‘majboori’ but for Congress it was a matter of delivering on our promise. What role has TRS played in making your dream of Telangana state come true? TRS has no contribution in preparing and passing of Telangana Bill. It is Congress alone which made Telangana state possible,” she said.

“TRS was launched on April 2, 2001 but I clearly remember that seven months before that, 45 Congress leaders of Telangana started a protest in Mahbubnagar demanding a separate state, passed a resolution and sent it to me. How can TRS claim credit for creating Telangana state,” she said.
Accusing the TDP of colluding with divisive forces, she said the RSS and BJP spread hatred and asked voters to be vigilant.
Sonia has a particular affiliation with Karimnagar. Since 1987, whenever she campaigned in Telangana, she made it a point to hold a public meeting at Karimnagar.
Aiming to soften ruffled feathers in Seemandhra, Sonia said the residuary state would be well taken care of and all promises and assurances given would be fulfilled. She hoped the people of Telangana and Seemandhra live in friendship.
