Outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Sabir Ali was expelled from the JD (U) Monday for praising BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi. Though the JD (U) had given him the ticket for Sheohar, Ali had not been keen on contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

Ali, who was an RS member from the LJP, had joined the JD (U) three years back on the assurance of being renominated to Rajya Sabha. However, the JD (U) did not repeat Ali along with Shivanand Tiwari and N K Singh. While Singh resigned from the JD (U) to join the BJP, Tiwari was expelled from the party.

The three had been offered a chance to contest the Lok Sabha polls, which they declined. Ali wanted to contest from East Champaran but was given Sheohar, which he eventually refused.

Ali has said he likes the “plans and policies discussed by Narendra Modi”. “Modi’s plans look attractive from a distance, one has to get close to have a fair idea of them,” said Ali.

Some Bihar BJP leaders have reservations about Ali’s inclusion, but the majority favour his joining to gain a “psychological advantage” over the JD(U) by getting another Muslim leader into the fold.
