The ruling BJP and Opposition legislators on Tuesday nearly came to blows in the assembly premises after the House was adjourned for the day over the Vyapam scam.
The Congress MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare, alleged that they were manhandled by their BJP counterparts when they were approaching the media room to give an account of the proceedings.
Speaker Sitasharan Sharma adjourned the House twice during the Question Hour when Congress legislators rushed to the Well raising slogans over the Vyapam scam. The treasury benches alleged that the Congress was not interested in letting the House function smoothly.
It was when the proceedings were adjourned for the day that the scuffle took place between the rival legislators. Congress legislators were trying to speak to the media when the BJP MLAs allegedly disrupted the interaction.
At least two Congress legislators fell down. The leader of opposition alleged that he was pushed and shoved and someone even punched him in the rib cage. “I thought my own party leaders were jostling for a photo op but when the shoving continued and someone kept hitting me in the sides that I turned back to find BJP legislators,’’ he said. He was admitted to a private hospital.
Katare lodged a protest with the Speaker, who called two Cabinet ministers to sort out things between the two parties. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra denied the charge that BJP legislators attacked their political rivals. He accused the Congress of disrupting proceedings and deliberately trying to create hostile atmosphere.
