The bypoll for the Beed Lok Sabha constituency was won by Pritam Munde of the BJP by a record margin of 6.96 lakh votes. The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of her father and senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde.
Riding a sympathy wave following the death of her father in a car accident, Pritam, who is the second of Munde’s two daughters, secured 9,22,416 votes (70.3 per cent of the votes polled). Ashok Patil, the Congress candidate, was at the second position with 2,26,095 votes.
Munde, who died in a road accident on June 3, had defeated NCP’s Suresh Dhus by a margin of 1.36 lakh votes in the Lok Sabha polls.
The highest victory margin so far was recorded in the Lok Sabha elections this year when CPM candidate from Arambagh (West Bengal) Anil Basu defeated his rival by 5.92 lakh votes.
