Senior Congress leader Raj Babbar was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the seat that was vacated after the death of Manorama Sharma Dobriyal on Friday. He was the lone candidate to file nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha seat.
Raj Babbar was selected as the Congress nominee on March 10, the last date for filing the nomination papers.
Several Uttarakhand Congress leaders were in race for the party ticket.
Babbar is considered to be the choice of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who reportedly wants to engage Babbar to expand the party’s base in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Accompanied by Chief Minister Harish Rawat and several Congress MLAs, Babbar reached the state assembly to receive the certificate of his election to Rajya Sabha. Babbar assured people that he would raise his voice to protect the interest of Uttarakhand in the House.
