Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has echoed Narendra Modi’s statement that the previous governments in Jammu and Kashmir have done nothing significant, but “looted” the state for over 60 years, saying the Prime Minister “sometimes speaks the truth”.

Addressing a Congress rally recently in Rajouri, Azad said, “In Jammu and Srinagar, I see that only visible works are either done during Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad’s government or my two-and-a-half year rule. Others have not done any work there.”

“These people created dissent among you for 65 years… They have done nothing on the ground. Modi sahib kabhi-kabhi theek kehtey hain (Modi sometimes speak the truth),” said Azad, who is also  Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha.

However, in the same breadth he asserted, “Modiji has never said that Ghulam Nabi Azad has looted. Have you ever heard him saying so in any meeting?”

Significantly, since 1947, Congress had been in power in Jammu and Kashmir for over 32 years either on its own or in coalition with Awami National Conference, National Conference or Peoples Democratic Party.
