WITH the Punjab Congress beset by the factional battle between state party president Partap Singh Bajwa and his predecessor, Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has now summoned all party MLAs to Delhi next week.
Rahul is expected to meet all 43 MLAs from Punjab on the evening of February 2. The MLAs were intimated about the meeting on Thursday evening. Party sources said Rahul Gandhi was prompted to summon the MLAs as most of them have rallied behind Capt Amarinder and forsaken Bajwa, who has Rahul’s backing. Amarinder had recently managed to garner the support of at least 33 MLAs, who all attended a luncheon he hosted at his Moti Bagh palace in Patiala before turning up for his rally against the drugs in Amritsar.
Several of the MLAs had reached the rally despite warnings from the PPCC and Congress leaders in Delhi that the Amarinder rally did not have the AICC stamp.
Both warring factions will now prepare a strategy for the meeting. Bajwa has so far had Rahul’s backing with the AICC vice-president even visiting Punjab on a number of occasions to strengthen the PPCC chief’s hand in the state. It now remains if the Congress vice-president would listen to the legislators or ask them to rally behind Bajwa yet again.
