Rane was allegedly campaigning for his father near Bandra poll booths along with some party members.

Nilesh and Nitesh Rane, both sons of Narayan Rane, the Congress candidate in the bypoll for Bandra (East) Assembly constituencies, were detained by the police on Saturday and released hours later.

All India Majlis-e-Ittahadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Byculla, Waris Pathan, and Vinayak Raut of the Shiv Sena were also taken into custody between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. The two were also released later.

Police said Nilesh was taken to the Vakola police station in Santacruz (East) while Nitesh, also a Congress MLA, was taken to the Kherwadi police station in Bandra (East). Pathan was detained in the Nirmal Nagar police station and Raut in the Bandra Kurla Complex police station for a short while.

“They were detained after they were seen in the constituency while polling was under way. All four were released after some time,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (North region) Milind Bharambe.

The officer said the polling went off peacefully.
