Days after the Gujarat education department decided to include a chapter on the life of Narendra Modi in its school textbooks, the Prime Minister on Friday reacted, saying he did not find the step to be a good idea.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter to express his reservation on the isssue, saying he did not find the inclusion of the life story of a living individual in school curriculum to be a good idea.

He further tweeted that the “young minds” must instead read about “stalwarts who made India what it is today”.

The Gujarat education department decided to include a chapter on Modi’s life in the Social Science textbooks of its primary section (Classes 5-7), from the academic session starting from June 2015.

“The chapter would give an opportunity to know some of the motivating facets of the PM’s life,” Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama had said.

“Incidents from his life, from his childhood to present day, would be included… his struggle, bravery — as a child, he caught a crocodile — how he opted to be an ascetic in his youth, his Kailash Yatra, the years spent in the Himalayas, his years as a RSS pracharak… how he changed all the adversities into opportunities,” he had said.

Chudasma said selected important and inspiring events starting from his birth, his humble family background, school days, how he faced struggle at different stages of his life would in included and a process has been initiated to form a committee to prepare the final list of events to be included.

The Madhya Pradesh state government is also planning to introduce lessons on Modi’s life to ‘inspire’ students.

If implemented, the lessons will be taught from Standard 3 to Standard 6. During the 2014 Lok Sabha campaign, several comics on his life were released in the country.
