On her maiden visit to Punjab after assuming charge as Women and Child Development Ministry, Maneka Gandhi arrived in dera of Sant Baba Nirmal Singh in village Dugri sans a pilot vehicle and not in a red beacon car. Clad in a printed yellow salwar kameej and yellow dupatta, Maneka had come to attend 7th barsi of Baba Nirmal Singh in this village and the devotees revealed that she was a regular visitor in this dera earlier too.
The Union Minister in a brief interaction with the media however revealed that as per the promises of NDA Government, her ministry will be setting up special `rape victim centres’ in every district of the country where medical as well as legal help will be provided to the victims.
The victims need not to run here and there to seek justice, rather a one stop centre will be made for them which will not only counsel the victims, but will also provide legal help in case anyone needs, she told. In addition to this Maneka also told that a special helpline will also be started to tackle with the cases related to crime against women as well as children.
Though no deadline was set by the new minister, she indicated that the works will be on track soon and a difference will be visible in the country.
The minister later attended the religious programme inside the dera where devotees had come from across the country. Thousands of devotees from India as well as abroad were seen attending this religious function.
The Minister however will be having a meeting with the women and child development department in Chandigarh on Monday and as she left for Chandigarh in the evening.
