Police and state officials on Sunday stopped the car of Rabri Devi, RJD’s candidate from Saran, for poll-related checking, stoking a fresh controversy with her husband and party chief Lalu Prasad alleging that it was a “conspiracy” by the communal forces.
The incident occurred at around 1.30 am at Shivbachan Chowk in Saran, when a team of police and administrative officials stopped the RJD carcade on a tip-off that Lalu and Rabri were distributing cash in the constituency. They were returning to Patna after campaign in the district.
Lalu and Rabri opposed the move on the grounds of “non-availability” of women police personnel and search order papers. The atmosphere was vitiated with frayed tempers and exchange of angry words, police said.
Lalu, who accompanied his wife, was seen on camera arguing with district police officers, including a DSP for “searching luggage of a woman contestant without presence of a lady constable”.
Rabri said, “It is conspiracy by Nitish Kumar and Rajiv Pratap Rudy to plant cash in my vehicle. I also see criminal conspiracy to kill us”.
An empty black SUV present on the spot and without a hind number plate added to the drama. “Eight criminals were following us in this black SUV. The plan was either to kill us or to implant cash in our vehicles. When they could not overtake us, the police stopped us on the pretext of search,” Lalu said, adding, “This was a conspiracy by the communal forces… There was no videographer with the police. They tried to harass a woman candidate.”
Rabri later went to Sonepur police station to file a case alleging threat to her life and Lalu said he would write to the EC against the search.
Saran SP Sudhir Kumar Singh, however, said, “We got information that Laluji and Rabri Devi were distributing money in Dighwara area of Sonepur. Accordingly, suitable action was initiated.” He asserted that Rabri has got women policemen for security and they were present there. (with PTI inputs)
