Janathipathya Samrakshana Samithi (JSS) floated by former CPM veteran K R Gouriyamma on Sunday quit the Congress-led United Democratic Front coalition.
The party also suffered a split with a faction deciding to stick with UDF. The exit of JSS would have little impact on the Congress government as JSS does not have any legislator. But JSS has the backing of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, Hindu backward class outfit.
The Congress leadership made clear it would not interfere in JSS matters.
JSS general secretary Gouriyamma has been sulking in UDF over a raw deal meted out to her party formed 20 years back after she was expelled from CPM over alleged anti-party activity. The decision to snap ties with UDF was taken in the state conference of the JSS held in Alappuzha.
Blaming Congress for neglecting civic issues, 94-year-old Gouriyamma said no force can weaken her party. “We are not going to the LDF,” she said.
Party president A N Rajan Babu, whose faction is staying with UDF said Gouriyamma wanted to take JSS into LDF.
