The call of the conscience weighed heavy over his affiliation to the TMC and his respect for party’s Krishnanagar MP, Tapas Paul, and made him a whistleblower.
The 24-year-old handed over the video clip of the “fiery speech” that his screen idol had delivered at his Choumaha village in Nadia district village on June 14. The video is now the talk of the nation and the youth, son of a sharecropper farmer, is now a hero, albeit a reluctant one. All he wants is safety for his family in a state where taking on a political leader is fraught with danger.
During his student days, the youth had joined the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and later became a TMC worker. On June 14, when Paul visited Choumaha village, he rushed to the spot to listen to him and even recorded his speech.
The speech was not what the youth had expected. It was discussed in the village — several others had recorded it on their mobile phones — for many days before a local news channel, 24 Ghanta, got to know about it. The reporter approached many people seeking a copy of the clip but none were ready. It took the reporter nearly 10 days to persuade the youth to give him the clip.
The youth told the reporter he was handing over the clip because of his conscience. He didn’t charge any money but said his name should not be exposed and his family’s safety should be ensured.
However, the Nadia district leadership of the TMC is zeroing-in on the youth. “We condemn Paul’s comments. But we have information the person who recorded the statement is a TMC worker. We are close to identifying him. The party would take action against him for demeaning the party,” said Ajay Dey, TMC’s Nadia district president.
