Taking on the Left in its bastion in West Bengal,Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed on Friday even the Chinese were baffled by the policies of the government in the state, where the situation was “far worse” that in Uttar Pradesh on the development front.

“I was asked by a Chinese communist leader while I was on a visit to China,’What kind of a communist government exists in Bengal? Why is there no change?’ I had no answer,” Gandhi told an election meeting in Siliguri.

The AICC general secretary said “Communism is finished in the rest of the world. What kind of communism is it in West Bengal which does not look after the poor?

“I work in Uttar Pradesh and thought UP was backward. I saw that the situation here is far worse than UP,” he said after addressing election meetings in Purulia and Bankura.

“The Left Front is in power in this state for over 32 years, and their thinking is also 30-40 year-old,” he said. To change the situation in the state,he exhorted the youth to come forward. “Until the youth comes forward,no change worth the name may be possible here.”

Gandhi was also critical of the Left’s opposition to the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. “When Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed it,the Left’s pretext was that the US would put pressure on India. No one can put pressure on India. We don’t have to be afraid of anyone.”
