In a bid to promote young leadership in the party structure,CPI-M today said it plans to limit the term of secretaries at all levels in the organisation to a maximum of three.

The proposal, which was discussed and adopted at the three-day Central Committee meeting of CPI-M which ended here today,is part of efforts to rejuvenate the party after it suffered its worst electoral drubbing.

“The Central Committee discussed a proposal for limiting the terms of secretaries of the party committees at all levels to a maximum of three terms. The proposal was adopted by the Central Committee,” CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.

The proposal will now be placed before the party congress for approval.

Asked for the reasons behind this move,Karat said the party wanted to encourage the youth to come forward. This step would benefit the younger leadership of the party to get more opportunities to work for the party.

It would also check the practice of some senior leaders occupying the high posts for several years denying others the chance to serve in those capacities.

The party lost power in West Bengal and Kerala this year.
