The Congress, claiming Gujarat police are “hushing up” the case against Narendra Modi for violation of the model code, has urged the Election Commission (EC) to take up the case or transfer it outside Gujarat.

Citing a reported Gujarat police claim that no case is made out against Modi under the Representation of the People Act, a letter to the EC from the Congress legal department said, “Gujarat police are trying to hush up the case…no fair investigation is being conducted by Gujarat police…”

On an EC directive, Gujarat police had registered the case against the Gujarat CM for displaying the BJP symbol and delivering a political speech outside the booth after he voted on April 30.

Contradicting Modi’s claim that he was caught unawares and his interaction with media was impromptu, the letter said it was pre-planned.

“Police did not allow mediapersons to meet Modi when he came out… and directed the media to go where the stage was set. It was a well-prepared speech,” it said.
