The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday announced the induction of five new members — former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay, singer Jaspinder Narula, former JD(U) member and Dalit activist Geeta Arya, retired General P C Panjikar and social activist and martial arts coach Anil Kumar Banfore.
The announcement of Pillay’s joining the party was made by AAP’s Pune unit.
While the party said Narula “has expressed her wish to mobilise support for the party in Punjab”, the singer, when asked whether she would contest the Lok Sabha polls, replied “yes”. “I would want to contest the elections from Punjab.”
Bansfore, who has featured in the Limca Book of World Records six times for his martial arts skills said he doesn’t want to contest but would do so if asked by the party. Following the footsteps of former JD(U) minister Parveen Amanullah, another member of the party — Geeta Arya joined the AAP on Monday. Arya, who has worked with the Valmiki community, said, “Playing into the hands of various political groups, Dalits in Bihar have been divided. The present state government has also done very little for this community.”
